Global Public Welfare Lecture (8): Seeing Others, Seeing Ourselves

ColumnsPublic Lectures

The eighth Global Public Welfare Lecture, titled “Seeing Others, Seeing Ourselves: Understanding, Empathy and Responsibility in Public Welfare, Education and Personal Growth”, draws on the authentic experiences of one family, one public welfare practitioner, and one educator to re-examine the meaning of the traditional Chinese ethical concepts *li*, *yi*, *lian* and *chi* (ritual propriety, righteousness, integrity and a sense of shame), and their relevance to public welfare. The lecture will take place from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on Sunday, 30 August 2026 (Singapore time, same as Beijing time), at Orchard Tower (1 Claymore Drive #02-15), Singapore, with simultaneous online access.

Three Segments

  • Sharing of real-life stories

  • Interactive roundtable discussion

  • Integration of culture and public welfare

Speakers

  • Ms Xu Haina: Children’s book author, columnist, and advocate for children’s mental health. She will share how to recognise and understand the genuine needs of families with children who have special educational needs, and how to learn acceptance, respect and empathy.

  • Mr Lim Yewsi: Longstanding volunteer across multiple charitable organisations; familiar with Singapore’s philanthropic ecosystem and committed to advancing community service and volunteer development. From the perspective of a public welfare participant, he will discuss the meaning of public welfare, pathways to engagement, and personal growth gained through service.

  • Mr Blue Yun’ao (Dennis Nah): Founder of DS Education Holdings; graduate of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; with 16 years’ experience in international education and youth development. From an educator’s perspective, he will explore how public welfare can serve as a vital component of adolescent development—cultivating orientation, competencies and a sense of responsibility.
